The Krewe of Endymion is one of the largest krewes showcased at the Madi Gras in New Orleans which is packed with spectacular floats and Grand Marshals. The Endymion was first founded in 1966 and the word Endymion comes from Greek mythology. The motto of this parade is ‘Throw Until it Hurts’. This is a wonderful tradition upheld by the Krewe Endymion Parade with people being very generous in throwing thousands of cups, beads, trinkets and doubloons at the annual parade. There is a spectacular party which immediately follows the parade known as the Endymion Extravaganza which is as extravagant as anything you would find in Las Vegas. Between 1974 and 1980, the Endymion Extravaganza was held at the Rivergate Convention Center. It has since moved to the Louisiana Superdome since 1981. The Endymion Krewe comprises of over 2000 members and guests reaching up to a massive 14,000 attending the Extravaganza.
The next Krewe Endymion is to be held on 5th March, 2011 and the theme will be centered on ‘Endymion’s American Masters’. There will be twenty five spectacular floats which will showcase American Masters in the form of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Mark Twain and Louis Armstrong. The Grand Marshall is yet to be named and will do the honor of leading the floats through massive crowds amidst the millions of beads and cups which will be generously thrown to decorate the streets. At the end of the parade it will be time to move on to the Endymion Extravaganza which will be held at the Convention Center in New Orleans. The members of Endymion Krewe and their visitors will be entertained by world class music and performers. The highlight of the Endymion Krewe is the shower of non stop throwing of beads and collectibles at the Mardi Gras.
Attend the super fabulous party at the Samedi Gras annual festival which comes to life at noon on New Orleans Avenue. Visitors can experience their favorite stars including All Stars, Bucktown, Rockin Dopsie and Topcats. As a tradition, the Grand Marshall is introduced at this special event. Keep in mind that the Endymion’s Samedi Gras festival is a free event with visitors requested that they bring their own chairs, blankets and refreshments.
